About Salem Health Hospitals and Clinics

Salem Health ED ambulance bay

Averaging over 300+ patients a day, Salem Hospital Emergency Department (SHED) is one of the busiest EDs on the West Coast! It’s that volume and efficiency that makes SEPS providers some of the best in the field of Emergency Medicine. We work efficiently and effectively at SEPS, and our SHED counterparts are a large part of that. At SEPS, you will feel supported in every aspect of your patients care.

APP Training Program

Exclusive to Salem Hospital and Designed for New Graduate APPs

Starting in 2016, our APP program plays an integral role within our emergency department (ED) and the Salem Emergency Physicians Service (SEPS) family. Our dedicated team has access to state-of-the-art imaging modalities and specialist consultations, ensuring comprehensive care for our patients. Operating within our designated ambulatory pod, our advanced Practice Providers (APPs) manage a significant portion of our ED patients, seeing over a third of our entire ED volume through this innovative area. The area runs much like its own emergency department and in fact is busier than many other EDs on the West Coast!

Our program fosters a collaborative environment, where our APPs work side-by-side with physicians, fostering camaraderie and facilitating clinical collaboration. We prioritize a team-based approach, recognizing the value of shared expertise in delivering exceptional patient care. In addition to competitive compensation and benefits, we prioritize work-life balance, providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.

SEPS group also offers unparalleled support and training opportunities for Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners (NP) through our innovative APP training program. As a cornerstone of our commitment to excellence in emergency medicine, our program is tailored to equip APPs with the specialized skills and knowledge necessary to excel in our fast-paced Level II Trauma Center at Salem Hospital.

Launched in October 2022, our program combines rigorous clinical experience with comprehensive educational components aimed at experienced APPs without ED experience and new graduates.

Clinical Component

The clinical component consists of three stages:

Stage 1

APPs spend the first 3 months under the direct guidance of board-certified emergency medicine physicians, who serve as mentors and educators, providing support and guidance throughout each patient interaction.

Stage 2

APPs work closely with experienced APPs for the subsequent 2 months, engaging in collaborative patient discussions to enhance clinical decision-making skills.

Stage 3

In the final month, APPs practice independently under the supervision of an identified mentor, ensuring ongoing support and guidance as they transition to autonomous practice.

Educational Component

The educational component is equally robust, with APPs participating in two full-day educational sessions per month. These sessions include both self-study opportunities and interactive lectures led by emergency medicine physicians, covering a wide range of clinically relevant topics.

If you’re passionate about emergency medicine and interested in joining our dynamic team of APPs, we invite you to learn more about our program and submit your resume and cover letter.
